Shopify Review 2026: The Audit
This Shopify review is an audit, not a tour. Shopify runs the most complete selling machine in commerce, and the sticker says $29 a month — but no store ever pays a builder a flat $29. You pay a plan fee, a percentage of every sale, a fixed fee on every order, and, unless you police it, a stack of app subscriptions that quietly outgrows the plan itself. We priced every line, and the honest total on a typical small store is $99.00 a month before you install a single app.
The figures below were verified in August 2026 against Shopify's published pricing and cross-checked with independent rate sheets. Where a number could not be pinned to a primary source, we say so and round with caution.
The plans, at rack rate
Shopify sells four self-serve tiers and an enterprise line. On annual billing, Basic is $29 a month, Grow is $79, and Advanced is $299. Pay month to month and the same tiers cost $39, $105, and $399 — on Basic, annual billing is a 25% saving, which is the first entry any bookkeeper posts. Below the storefront plans sits Starter at $5 a month, which sells only through links and social channels and does not include a full storefront. Above them all, Shopify Plus starts at $2,300 a month and belongs in a different audit entirely.
When we pulled Shopify's own pricing page, it displayed promo-state figures — $27 and $19 for Basic among them — rather than standard rates. The rack rates in this audit are confirmed across multiple independent 2026 sources. Budget against the rack rate: a promotional sticker is a temporary state of a pricing page, not your long-run cost.
The on-ramp is a 3-day free trial followed by $1 a month for the first 3 months. That is a real discount with a hard expiry; the plan line at month four is the one that belongs in your forecast.
Shopify Payments: the rate card
Online card processing through Shopify Payments, for US standard cards, steps down as the plan steps up: Basic pays 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction, Grow pays 2.7% + $0.30, and Advanced pays 2.5% + $0.30. Starter pays 5% + $0.30 — the quiet tax on the $5 plan. Premium and AmEx cards run higher: 3.5% on Basic, 3.3% on Grow, 3.1% on Advanced, each plus $0.30, so a store with an AmEx-heavy customer base should model its blended rate rather than the headline one.
The $5 Starter plan deserves its own arithmetic. Its 5% + $0.30 rate sits 2.1 points above Basic's, which costs $21 per $1,000 of sales; the $24 of plan fee it saves is exhausted at roughly $1,140 a month. Below that line, Starter is the cheaper Shopify. Above it, the link-in-bio tier quietly becomes the expensive one — and sellers keep treating the $5 plan as the budget option long after it stops being one.
In person, the card-present rates are 2.6% + $0.10 on Basic, 2.5% + $0.10 on Grow, and 2.4% + $0.10 on Advanced. POS itself is included; POS Pro is an $89 per month, per location add-on for stores with a real counter.
Price the plan upgrades before admiring them. Moving from Basic to Grow buys 0.2 points of processing — $2 per $1,000 of card volume — against a $50-a-month plan difference. That trade clears at $25,000 a month in sales, and not a dollar sooner. Upgrade for the 5 staff accounts if you must; do not upgrade for the rate.

The third-party gateway surcharge
Decline Shopify Payments and Shopify adds its own surcharge on top of whatever your gateway already charges: 2.0% on Basic, 1.0% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced, and 0.2% on Plus. At $2,000 a month on Basic, that is an extra $40 for the privilege of using another processor — before the other processor's own fees. Unless a contract forces your hand, this line should read zero. The surcharge exists to make every other answer uneconomic, and it succeeds.
Checkout conversion: the evidence, label attached
Shopify's headline claim comes from a study by a Big Three consultancy: its checkout converts up to 36% better than competitors and roughly 15% better on average — 12% against BigCommerce, 5% against Magento, 36% against Salesforce Commerce Cloud. File two facts side by side: the study is widely cited, and Shopify commissioned it. We book it as directionally credible and precisely unverifiable. Even a fraction of the claimed lift covers the plan — a 5% checkout improvement on $2,000 a month is $100 of revenue set against a $29 line item.
Apps: the ecosystem and the creep
The App Store is the moat. At the time of checking it held around 13,000 apps by most counts — the largest catalog of any builder by an order of magnitude. Whatever the store lacks — subscriptions, bundles, wholesale pricing, loyalty points — an app exists, usually several competing ones, each with a free tier engineered to expire the week you start depending on it.
It is also the leak. Typical stores run 5 to 15 paid apps, and a realistic basic stack — reviews, email, upsell, SEO — books $50–$150 a month; $300 or more a month is common at scale. This is the most under-budgeted line in Shopify ownership: a $29 plan carrying a $120 app stack is, functionally, a $149 platform. Audit the list quarterly and cancel anything that cannot state its return in dollars.
Budget the stack as a band, not a hope. Write $50–$150 a month into the forecast on day one, book every install as a recurring liability rather than a feature, and require each app to displace either revenue you can count or hours you currently pay for. The stores that keep Shopify cheap treat the App Store as a procurement exercise, not a candy aisle.
Themes: a one-time line
Free themes are competent and kept current. Premium themes run roughly $100–$400 one-time, with the Theme Store's common range at $180–$350. One-time is the operative phrase — a theme is capital expenditure rather than a subscription, which makes it the rare entry in this audit that stops costing money after it clears. Amortized over even two years of trading, a $250 theme is about $10 a month of design.
The per-sale math
Our standard test store does $2,000 a month across 40 orders at a $50 average. On Basic with Shopify Payments: 2.9% of $2,000 is $58.00; 40 orders at $0.30 each is $12.00; processing totals $70.00. Add the $29 plan and the month closes at $99.00 all-in — an effective 4.95% of revenue. On monthly billing, the identical store books $109.00, which is why we quote annual rates throughout.
Your store is not the test store. Run your own sales volume and order count through our fees calculator, which prices this identical ledger for every builder we track and ranks the results cheapest first.
Two inclusions and one debit round out Basic. The credits: 200-plus real-time reports with custom analytics on every core plan, and shipping discounts up to 77% (Grow and Advanced reach 88%, and Advanced adds live third-party carrier-calculated rates). The debit: Basic includes zero additional staff accounts, so the owner works alone until Grow, which allows up to 5, or Advanced, at up to 15.
The balance
Shopify Basic is the best $29 in commerce for a store that intends to become a business: honest plan pricing, a competitive processing line, no platform fee inside Shopify Payments, and the deepest bench of apps and integrations in the industry. The costs that surprise are the ones you add yourself — which also means they are the ones you control.
